Duncan and Woodbine (Reception)
Welcome to Duncan and Woodbine.
Miss Williams (Woodbine), Mrs Hughes (Duncan), Miss Foster, Miss Maclaren and Miss Lee would like to welcome you to our Reception class webpage.
Our aim is to support the well-being of every child to ensure that they can thrive in our learning environment.
The Early Years Foundation Stage Document https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/early-years-foundation-stage-framework--2 outlines the Early Learning Goals that children are expected to achieve by the end of Reception year. All of our learning activities are planned from the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, enabling your child to make progress towards these goals. There is also additional guidance in this document about how to support your child in all areas of their learning during their year in Reception.
If you have any queries or questions about your child and their learning, then please don't hesitate to ask. We are here to help and want the best for your child!

Key information
- We celebrate all children's achievements in class and the progress they have made. We have a special 'Recognition Board' with a different focus for each week. Children's photographs are placed on the board when they achieve the weekly goal. If all children achieve the weekly goal then we earn a special treat. Each week a child will be chosen who has gone 'above and beyond' whilst demonstrating our school values. These children will then be invited to the 'Celebration Station' with Mrs Campbell as a special treat.
- All children are provided with their own water bottle which is kept in school.
- Fruit and milk is offered during morning snack.
- Children should bring spare clothes into school which can be left on their coat peg.
- Parents/carers will be kept up-to date with what their child is learning in school through the SeeSaw app. Please speak to a member of the team if you are not signed up to this.
Reading Homework
- Each week your child will receive a reading book linked to our phonics scheme. This is for your child to read to you. Children should practise reading their book a few times during the week. Reading records should have a signature or a comment from parents/carers so we know you have read with your child. Alongside this, your child will also receive a reading for pleasure book. This is for you to read to your child.
- Book bags are sent out on a Thursday and should be returned on the following Tuesday, ready to be changed.
- Reading should be an enjoyable and fun activity for your child. There are some helpful reading tips inside the reading record and each week, we will highlight the letter sounds and words the children have learnt in class. Please practise these letter sounds and words at home.
- The blank level questions are there for you to use with your child when reading their book. We use these questions in class as they help children to develop their comprehension and language skills.
- If you have any queries or questions about reading, please speak to a member of the Reception team.
